You heard it here first.
New news on the Ioan front! I found out about this on the IMDB message boards, and got details from Ioanzone. Apparently Ioan's in Australia right now, filming something called "Sanctum". There are a grand total of two paragraphs with details about the film, but based on those paragraphs and my knowledge of how films work, I here offer some predictions on what's going to happen in this film.
Before I begin, here are the two paragraphs in question:
Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron serves as co-writer and co-producer of director Gary Johnstone's high-definition 3-D feature concerning an ambitious father/son deep-sea expedition that turns life-threatening when the crew descends to uncharted depths to explore the underwater caves that stand as one of the last frontiers of earthbound exploration. Stripped to their most primitive instincts and forced to resort to desperate, unproven measures as a means of survival, the frightened father and son are forced to come to terms with both themselves and their surroundings as they struggle to overcome one of the most punishing and unforgiving environments on the planet. Filmed with the 3-D Fusion camera system developed by producer Cameron and partner Vince Pace, Sanctum is set to be simultaneously released on both traditional screens and in theaters equipped for digital 3-D exhibition as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
And:
An alert action-thriller about a team of divers in a magnificent expedition to the most beautiful, unexplored and least accessible underwater cave system in the world. In the expedition is Frank McGuire (Richard Roxburgh) - an individualist explorer and his son of 17 years, Josh, who came in protest, and billionaire Carl Hurley (Ioan Gruffudd), whose purpose is to undermine the expedition. When a sudden tropical storm makes its appearance, their only escape is to get out of the cave, which may come only after everything is flooded with water. All you have to do is find an air reservoir and leave the location in time, because the cave does not allow mistakes. Immersive 3D Sanctum promises a delightful experience. A film produced by James Cameron.
From these, I deduce:
*There will be at least one scene on land to establish the characters. With luck, Ioan will be introduced while wearing a suit.
*Ioan's character is on this expedition (probably he's the one funding it) because he thinks it will bring him money/fame.
*Since the son came under protest, there will be a lot of Father/son dynamics going on, and the incident will bring them closer together.
*Ioan's character will be an arrogant ass until the storm hits, at which point he will turn into a whiny coward.
*Depending on how factual they keep the film (it's supposedly based on a true story), the team will encounter something mystical within the caves, a la The Abyss.
In an attempt to survive/get his way, Ioan's character will threaten to kill the father or son if the other one doesn't comply.
*Ioan's character is going to die in this film. He's the bad guy, and by definition, he is doomed. The only question is how. Possibilities include drowning, explosion due to rapid decompression, shot by a harpoon, eaten by a shark, destroyed by the aforementioned mystical thing, killed by his own hubris, or maybe just succumbing to the cold. There's a slim chance that he's not the main villain in the piece, meaning that he'll see the error of his ways and switch loyalties, and an even slimmer chance that he'll survive and turn his life around. But my money, sad to say, is on death.
Once the film actually comes out, I'll come back to this checklist and see how much of it I got right.
And yes, the IMDB page for Sanctum doesn't mention Ioan or Richard Roxburgh. I'm not sure what to make of that.

okay
This film has the potential to be good, but I know movies too well. If Ioan really IS the villain, he's a dead man.
